About Miss Sophie Renton

Personal Profile

Miss Sophie Renton Is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Northwick Park Hospital and an Honorary Senior Lecturer for Imperial College.

She qualified in 1983 from the Middlesex Hospital, University of London. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1988. Her higher surgical training took place in North West and South West Thames. During  this time, she undertook a period of research at St Mary’s Hospital and completed her MS higher degree.

She has been a Consultant in Vascular Surgery at Northwick Park Hospital since 1996. Her Vascular Surgery workload included open and endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms, carotid endarterectomy and peripheral bypass surgery. Her special interest is in the management of peripheral vascular disease and the management of the diabetic foot. Although she now only works part time for the NHS, she remains part of the LNWUH NHS trust multidisciplinary team caring for patients with foot complications in diabetes. She has extensive experience in the management of venous conditions including varicose veins, venous ulcers and the post phlebitic leg. She is the local Principal Investigator for a number of collaborative research projects exploring best methods to treat ulcers. She introduced endovenous surgery in to her trust. She regularly performs a wide range of techniques including radio-frequency ablation, mechano-chemical ablation and foam sclerotherapy for varicose veins, along with microsclerotherapy for thread veins. She is an advocate for the management of venous disease as a daycase procedure predominantly under local anaesthetic.

Miss Renton has always had a strong interest in education and training the next generation of surgeons. She has held multiple educational roles including Surgical tutor, training programme director and Liaison member for the Specialist Advisory Committee. She has participated in specialist registrar recruitment and is an examiner for the Intercollegiate FRCS exam. She is currently the chair of the Vascular exam board for the JCIE. She is also a reviewer for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and participates in the independent reviews of services for the college.
Miss Renton was elected to the Council of the Vascular Society in 2013. She has sat on the Education committee, the Workforce Committee and the Annual Scientific Meeting Committee. She is currently the Secretary of the Society. She was the Lead author of the Provision of Services for Vascular patients in 2018 and chairs the writing group for the revised version to be published in November 2021.
