About Dr Sofia Metaxa

Personal Profile

Dr Sofia Metaxa is a senior Consultant Cardiologist at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, practising at Princess Margaret Hospital. She also holds an honorary contract with University College London Hospitals (UCLH), where she is involved in research at the Chalfont National Epilepsy Centre. 

Dr Metaxa has extensive experience in the management of complex cardiac conditions and is passionate about delivering individualised, patient-centred care. Her clinical practice spans all areas of general cardiology, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, hyperlipidaemia, arrhythmias, syncope, structural heart disease, and the complex syndrome of heart failure. 

She is a Heart Failure Specialist and holds Heart Failure Accreditation from the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Association. Her specialist interests include cardiac implantable electronic devices and stress echocardiography. She routinely performs cardiac procedures, including implantation of single- and dual-chamber pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac loop recorders. Dr Metaxa is a member of the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) and holds full BSE accreditation in Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography and Stress Echocardiography. 

Dr Metaxa graduated from Athens Medical School in 2003 and subsequently obtained a Master’s degree in Coronary Care Units. She completed doctoral research on genetic polymorphisms in ischaemic heart disease and was awarded a PhD from Athens Medical School. She undertook her postgraduate specialist cardiology training in Athens, gaining extensive clinical experience, and achieved her Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology in 2013.

Since her appointment at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Metaxa has played an instrumental role in the Heart Failure Service and has contributed significantly to the development of the Stress Echocardiography programme. She has authored several publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and is actively involved in medical education, including teaching medical students and junior doctors, as well as supervising cardiology trainees.
