About Mr Simon Radley

Personal Profile

Mr Simon Radley is a highly experienced Consultant Colorectal Surgeon. He graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1985 with Honours in Surgery. Following his initial training as a house officer in Birmingham, he went on to become a lecturer in anatomy at the University of Birmingham, where he developed a strong academic foundation in surgical science.

He later completed senior house officer training before undertaking dedicated research into colorectal cancer. His work in this area led to the submission of a thesis, for which he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) by the University of Birmingham.

Mr Radley completed his registrar training in general and colorectal surgery across the West Midlands before undertaking specialist colorectal training at St Mark’s Hospital in London, one of the UK’s leading centres for bowel disease. During this period, he also received competitive funding from the International College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of England to undertake an overseas travelling fellowship in the United States, where he studied advanced treatments for rectal cancer.

After completing his training, he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Colorectal Surgery at the University of Birmingham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He later became an NHS Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in 2002.

He has held several senior leadership roles, including Clinical Service Lead for Gastro-intestinal Surgery at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He has also played a key role in introducing laparoscopic colorectal surgery and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways across both NHS and private practice, including The Priory Hospital.

Mr Radley has published extensively in the field of colorectal disease, with particular expertise in functional bowel disorders. He is also known for his work in developing integrated patient pathways and improving access to specialist bowel care.

He was instrumental in establishing the Birmingham Bowel Clinic, the first private centre of excellence for bowel conditions in the West Midlands.
