Dr Woldman is the Director of Barts Heart Centre, one of the largest tertiary cardiovascular centres in Europe. He is a Consultant Cardiologist with special expertise in Heart Failure, Endocarditis and General Cardiology.
He qualified in 1989 from Glasgow University with commendation and trained in the West of Scotland. He was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at the Ayr Hospital in 2001 before moving to UCLH in Euston in 2016.
The merger of the UCLH cardiology department with departments from Barts Hospital and London Chest Hospitals created Barts Heart Centre in 2015. Dr Woldman became the director in 2019.
His particular interest is in complex and advanced cardiac disease. He has been an investigator in many of the landmark trials in heart failure, including the renowned “Paradigm HF” trial when a new drug was finally found to be superior to ACE inhibitors (such as ramipril and enalapril). He has a keen interest in trying to help those with advanced heart failure, especially those who have recurrent admissions to hospital or are particularly symptomatic. In NHS practice, he works closely with the Papworth Transplant Unit.
Additionally, Dr Woldman is an expert in the management of endocarditis. This disease, caused by a bacterial infection in the heart has a mortality in published studies of up to 21%. He has led the endocarditis team at Barts Hospital since 2015, and mortality in this unit is as low as 13%, with an 8% mortality for patients who require surgery. His research interests include new ways to diagnose endocarditis and the use of devices to shorten hospital stay, by allowing antibiotics to be given in the community.
He sees patients with all manner of cardiology problems and works with a variety of experts in other subspecialties of cardiovascular disease who deliver angiograms, angioplasty and ablations to his patients.
