About Prof Simon Williams

Personal Profile

Prof Williams was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Wythenshawe Hospital in 2005 after training in Cardiology in Sheffield, Leeds and Liverpool. He well known for his approachability and being able to put patients at ease. 

He is the Chair of the British Society for Heart Failure (BSH), The National Professional Charity for Heart Failure, having sat on the board over a 10 year period. He is also a Board Member of The British Cardiac Society (BCS). 

Prof Williams also has a research interest in heart failure, with over 120 peer-reviewed journal publications and is an Honorary Professor at The University of Manchester. He frequently gives invited lectures at national and international conferences, and was the Clinical Expert on NICE technology appraisals for heart failure medications, Ivabradine (2010) and Sacubitril-Valsartan (2016). 

He sits on several national panels advising health policy, including the NHS long term plan (heart failure and valve disease) and has recently advised NICE and NHS England during the COVD pandemic. He is co-author of the 2020 British Heart Foundation (BHF) document “Heart Failure: a blueprint for change”

Prof Williams is the clinical expert leading the “Fighting failure” campaign, a national awareness campaign developed by the BSH and Novartis, partnering with other organisations such as the British Heart Foundation (BHF), The British Cardiac Society (BCS) and the UK's 2 leading patient charities; Pumping Marvellous and Cardiomyopathy UK.

He lives in Hale with his wife and 2 children. He is a supporter of Altrincham FC and enjoys skiing, running and Coronation Street.
