About Mr Shay Nanthakumaran

Personal Profile

Mr Shay Nanthakumaran is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Weight Loss Surgeon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. He is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen Medical School.

He provides a wide range of surgical treatments, including robotic surgery, keyhole (laparoscopic) procedures, and open surgery.

Qualifications and experience

Mr Nanthakumaran is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences on upper gastrointestinal cancer and weight loss surgery.

He studied Medicine at the University of Aberdeen, graduating in 2000, and completed his surgical training in Aberdeen and Glasgow. In 2010, he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) for his research into how nutrition affects cancer cell behaviour.

In 2012, he completed a prestigious Ethicon National Advanced Laparoscopic Fellowship in Newcastle, gaining extensive experience in keyhole surgery for weight loss. 

His areas of expertise include:

  • Surgery for oesophageal and stomach cancer
  • Weight loss procedures such as gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric band, and intragastric balloon
  • Anti-reflux surgery
  • General surgery including abdominal wall and groin hernia repairs and removal of the gallbladder.

He played a key role in setting up Scotland’s first robotic upper gastrointestinal surgery programme at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and performed the country’s first robotic weight loss surgery in March 2022.

Teaching and education

He has a strong interest in medical education. He teaches postgraduate courses for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is actively involved in undergraduate teaching. He is the Lead for General Surgery Teaching at the University of Aberdeen.
