Training and Education
Dr. Paramothayan completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge in 1988 and obtained an undergraduate medical degree with distinction from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, University of London, in 1993. Her training included work at several renowned London hospitals, including the Royal Brompton Hospital, and she completed specialist respiratory training in 2001.
Additionally, Dr. Paramothayan holds a Master’s degree in Medical Law (LLM) from the University of Cardiff and is involved in medico-legal work. With a strong commitment to education, she earned a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the Royal College of Physicians and University College London.
Practice
Dr. Paramothayan served as a substantive consultant in the NHS from 2001 until May 2024 and now practices in the private sector. She is available to see both insured and self-pay patients.
She also specialises in treating patients with chronic cough, unexplained breathlessness, and recurrent chest infections and performs bronchoscopy and bronchial lavage procedures.
Dr. Paramothayan has been actively involved in teaching and training both undergraduate and postgraduate students, having served as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s Medical School from 2005-2018, participating in MBBS examinations, and later as a Senior Lecturer at Kent and Medway Medical School from 2020–2024.
Dr. Paramothayan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. She was a Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills (PACES) examiner from 2009-2020 and a member of the Association of Medical Educators (ASMEE).
Research
In addition to her clinical and academic work, she has numerous publications, including systematic reviews, and authored the textbook "Essential Respiratory Medicine," published by Wiley-Blackwell in December 2018. This textbook is widely used by medical students, junior doctors, non-respiratory specialists, general practitioners, nurse specialists, and allied health professionals.
