Personal Profile
Dr Khan has a strong research and academic interest and has published over 35 papers in peer reviewed journals. He has also written chapters in five musculoskeletal radiology books. He also regularly lectures nationally and internationally and is on the Faculty of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound course, run by University of Cumbria.
Dr Shah Khan is the first and only British radiologist to be awarded the prestigious European Society of Skeletal Radiologist and International Skeletal Society prize in 2005 for his research on hand tumours. His latest research project has been to devise the innovative ultrasound arthrographic imaging of plantar plate injuries in the foot, which is transforming the diagnosis of this common but under-recognised condition.
His main interests are sports injuries imaging, early joint arthritis detection, back pain diagnosis and application of ultrasound, MRI or CT scans in the diagnosis of rheumatologic and orthopaedics disorders. He has a particular interest in imaging guided interventions for diagnosis and therapeutic pain relief for orthopaedics and rheumatologic disorders. Increasingly Dr Khan is being referred patients for guided injection due to greater efficacy and higher patient satisfaction. He also leads in neuroradiology multidisciplinary meetings at the Trust, which has considerable overlap with the musculoskeletal system.
Dr Khan constantly updates his skill and knowledge to keep abreast with the rapidly changing world of musculoskeletal imaging and thereby ensuring the latest imaging techniques are available to help in the diagnosis and treatment of his patients. He has in the process obtained a higher qualification, MSK Diploma from the European Society of Skeletal Radiologists.
