About Mr Sebastien Crosswell

Sebastian Crosswell Personal Profile

Mr Crosswell works as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Great Western Hospital, with a specialist interest in knee and complex hip surgery. He completed his Bachelor of Science with Honors at Kings College London University in 2011 and his medical degree at The University of Southampton in 2012 with distinction.

His early surgical training was completed on the prestigious Oswestry rotation, where he gained experience in Plastics, Vascular and Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as high level experience in Trauma Surgery at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg. During his highly competitive Trauma & Orthopaedics Surgery training in Bristol from 2016, Mr Crosswell was trained by internationally renowned surgeons in hip, knee and trauma surgery. Here he was awarded multiple prizes for research projects, published in multiple peer reviewed journals, and led on multimillion pound research projects.

In 2023, he completed a 12-month fellowship in lower limb joint replacement surgery at the renowned Orthopaedic Research Institute (ORI) in Bournemouth, under the supervision of Professor Middleton. Here, he gained experience in hip replacement surgery, hip revision surgery, knee replacement surgery and trauma surgery. He was an honorary research fellow at Bournemouth University and gathered and published data on robotic hip surgery and enhanced recovery surgery.

He takes pride in always using the best performing implants for hip and knee surgery as recorded on the National Joint Register, which have a minimum of 15-year survivorship in 95% of cases. Being a meticulous planner, he uses a variety of different techniques and implants to suit each patients unique case, considering bone quality, age and activity level. All hip joint replacements are planned by Mr Crosswell on computer software to ensure perfect placement and sizing of implants to suit each patient. His surgical techniques and precision focus on minimising damage to soft tissue and in turn reducing levels of post-operative pain. Results speak for themselves with patients walking straight away post-surgery and being discharged on the same day or within 24 hours.

Each patient is extremely important to Mr Crosswell, who takes considerate time to listen, examine and understand your medical condition in his clinic as well as explaining all the options available to you, both surgical and non-surgical. If you choose surgery and your case is more complex, or you are seeing him for a second opinion, he will discuss your case with other members of his multidisciplinary team.

He is a keen educator who enjoys mentoring more junior surgeons and training them to the highest level to ensure clinical excellence for our future surgeons in the NHS. He has been a faculty member on many courses and sits on quality assurance panels for trainees in the Bristol region. He highlights the importance of work life balance to ensure good decision making and high-quality care for patients.

Outside work, Mr Crosswell enjoys skiing, sailing for both leisure and competitively, and always has time for Sunday walks with his family and dogs. He is a member of the Primary Trauma Care Society and travels around the world to organise and teach on Trauma courses in developing countries.

Please note Mr Crosswell does not see patients for ACL injuries.
