Sebastian Dawson-Bowling specialises in all aspects of lower limb surgery, most predominantly primary and revision hip and knee surgery. He holds a substantive consultant contract with Barts Health NHS Trust, with clinical duties at both the Royal London Hospital and at the Gateway Surgiccal Centre in Newham, where he is orthopaedic lead for the development of the new arthroplasty (hip and knee) centre.

Having completed his undergraduate training at Magdalene College, Cambridge and Guy's and St. Thomas's Hospitals, he undertook his basic and specialist surgical training in the South East Thames region. Having obtained subspecialist fellowship training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore and at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, he worked for a year as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at St. George’s Hospital, London before taking up his current post in January 2014.

Sebastian maintains a strong academic interest, graduating in 2008 from Cardiff University Law School with a Masters’ degree in medical law (LLM), completing a thesis on Medical Negligence and Informed Consent.

He also completed a MSc degree (2009) at Brighton and Sussex Medical School based on his laboratory research into uncemented hip resurfacing implants, and to date he has co-authored 12 peer-reviewed publications.

He is a reviewer for several journals including the Bone and Joint Journal, The Knee and the British Medical Journal. He regularly presents his work at international conventions, including the British Orthopaedic Association and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Current research interests include the development of accelerated recovery pathways for patients undergoing joint replacement surgery. He has contributed book chapters on orthopaedics, trauma and medical law to various volumes published by Oxford University Press and PasTest, and has himself published 3 orthopaedic textbooks as a lead author or editor.

Outside work, Sebastian is married to Emma, a psychiatrist, with two children, Elspeth and Daniel. A former Cambridge University and GB oarsman, he continues to maintain an active interest in exercise and training. He is also a keen classical music enthusiast.
