About Dr Saqib Chowdhary

Personal Profile

Dr Saqib Chowdhary qualified from St Thomas' Hospital, London having trained in Cardiology and Coronary Intervention at University Hospital Birmingham, University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire (Walsgrave Hospital) and The University Health Network in Toronto, Canada.

He was awarded his PhD in Medicine in 2002 in which he published extensively in the fields of nitric oxide, cardiac autonomic dysfunction and heart failure. In 2003, he was awarded the prize of 'Young Investigator of the Year' by The British Cardiac Society. Subsequently, he was awarded an International Interventional fellowship at the Toronto General and Mount Sinai Hospitals.

He is a Consultant in Cardiology and Coronary Intervention at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester where he was appointed in 2006. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at The University of Manchester and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London). During his tenure, he led the Cardiology department at Wythenshawe Hospital from 2014 to 2017. 

Dr Chowdhary is a recognised national expert in the use of imaging within heart arteries to improve the results of angioplasty and stenting - intra-coronary ultrasound (IVUS) & optical coherence tomography (OCT) - and runs a national training course for this, that has trained many other UK consultants and doctors.

He continues to contribute to cardiac care through research, focusing on the treatment of heart attacks, and has published 50 scientific papers including some in Medicine’s top journals - e.g. New England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet.
