Dr Mathew is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, with his substantive NHS position held at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, alongside specialist hepatology clinics run at Epsom and St Heliers NHS Trust.
He qualified in London in 2004 from Guys, Kings and St Thomas, with his CCT obtained in 2017, with triple accreditation across Gastroenterology, Hepatology and General Internal Medicine. He completed his registrar training in London with National sub-specialist training in Hepatology across Kings and St Marys (Imperial), before moving to Guildford.
He has held senior roles as Chief of Service, and Head of Medicine and Emergency Services at the Royal Surrey from 2019 to 2022, leading the Trust to its first Outstanding CQC rating in Medicine, as well as a pivotal role in leading the Trusts COVID pandemic response.
Dr Mathew completed his PhD at the University of Surrey, with formal basic science research undertaken at the Royal Free and Hammersmith hospitals as well.
Dr Mathew provides consultant care across general Gastroenterology and IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), as well as treating complex Hepatology cases, providing care across inpatient and outpatient services.
Dr Mathew is a JAG certified endoscopist, and runs diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy (OGD and Colonoscopy) lists, as well as emergency GI bleed procedures.
He is a key member of the regional hepatopancreatobiliary cancer multidisciplinary team at the Royal Surrey, and regional co-chair of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) services. He is also a committee member of the national BASL HCC UK committee. He runs specialist joint-clinics in hepatocellular carcinoma and liver transplantation.
