About Mr Rowland Rees

Personal Profile

Mr Rowland Rees is a Consultant Urological Surgeon and Andrologist based at University Hospitals Southampton and Honorary Consultant at University College London Hospital. He provides a regional tertiary referral service for male genito-urethral surgery across the Wessex region and is recognised as a specialist in andrological and reconstructive urology.

Mr Rees qualified in Medicine from the Royal London Hospital in 1995 before completing surgical training at St George's and the Royal Marsden Hospitals. He subsequently undertook higher urological training on the Wessex rotation and completed a fellowship in andrological surgery at the Institute of Urology in London. Prior to his clinical training, he obtained a First Class Honours degree in Neurophysiology from the University of London and undertook research at the Wolfson Institute, UCL, investigating novel therapeutic targets for erectile dysfunction.

His specialist interests encompass all aspects of andrology and male genital surgery, including the treatment of Peyronie's disease, erectile dysfunction, urethral strictures, male infertility and vasectomy reversal. He also manages more common urological conditions such as foreskin disorders and scrotal swellings.

Mr Rees performs more than 300 specialist procedures each year and has extensive experience in complex reconstructive and prosthetic surgery, including penile prosthesis implantation, urethroplasty, artificial urinary sphincter insertion, male sling surgery, vasectomy reversal and corrective surgery for penile curvature.

Alongside his NHS practice, Mr Rees provides private consultations and surgery at Sarum Road Hospital in Winchester and OneWelbeck in London. He also works closely with University College London Hospital, providing specialist services for penile cancer and penile prosthesis surgery.

Mr Rees is actively involved in education and training. Since 2019 he has led a Senior Andrology Fellowship programme at University Hospital Southampton, attracting urologists from the UK and overseas who wish to develop specialist expertise in andrology. He regularly lectures and performs live surgery at national and international meetings and provides ongoing mentorship to consultants developing specialist interests in reconstructive andrological surgery.

He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and over 10 book chapters in the fields of urology and andrology. His research interests include erectile dysfunction, reconstructive urology and male genito-urethral surgery, and he continues to contribute to clinical research and surgical innovation.

His leadership roles have included serving as Chairman of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Section of Andrology and Genito-Urethral Surgery between 2018 and 2020, as well as representing the Wessex region on NHS England's Urology Commissioning Committee.

Mr Rees is committed to delivering the highest standards of patient care and is known for his calm, approachable manner and clear communication. Patients frequently comment on his ability to explain complex conditions and treatment options in a reassuring and understandable way.
