About Dr Robert Hawthorn

Personal Profile

Dr Hawthorn graduated from University of Glasgow in 1981 and completed all initial training in Glasgow. He became member of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1986 and subsequently a Fellow of the College. He was appointed Consultant Gynaecologist in 1993 in Glasgow with a special interest in minimal access surgery. The first such appointment in the country.

He is one of the most experienced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeons in the country, with papers published in these areas and relevant research published. He has extensive teaching experience in these areas having taught his skills on courses in UK, Canada, Europe and in New Zealand. Previous research in abnormal cells in the cervix resulted in award of M.D., and he has a honorary FRCS degree in addition.

Dr Hawthorn is the Clinical Lead of the BSGE Endometriosis Centre in Glasgow with particular interest in endometriosis fertility sparing surgery. He is a past secretary of BSGE and current member.

He developed the technique of extraperitoneal laparoscopy to deal with urinary incontinence and developed other procedures to manage recurrent prolapse. He is also part of the Urogynaecology team.
