Dr Shamji is a Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine based in the Centre for Musculoskeletal Medicine at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
He has extensive experience working in elite sport over many years. He has held senior roles within high-performance medical teams, where he has been responsible for supporting athletes through injury and ensuring safe return to high-level competition following significant or complex injuries affecting joints, muscles, and tendons.
He provides specialist, individualised care for people of all activity levels — from elite athletes to those aiming to return to everyday movement and exercise. Having worked alongside leading rehabilitation teams in the UK and internationally, he brings a detailed, evidence-based approach to the management of complex injuries and pain conditions.
He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (UK).
Dr Shamji has held several senior leadership roles in professional sport. He served as Head of Medical Services at Aston Villa Football Club for several years, overseeing the medical care and rehabilitation of elite players. He has also worked as Chief Medical Officer at Walsall Football Club and held medical officer roles with the English Institute of Sport, supporting athletes including Paralympic competitors.
He was part of the medical team at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where he worked as a Field of Play Team Leader, supporting athlete safety and performance during competition. He has also provided specialist care for military personnel at the Cranwell Regional Rehabilitation Unit.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Shamji has been involved in public health initiatives aimed at improving population health through physical activity. With support from Public Health England and Birmingham City Council, he led the development of the “Prescription for Exercise” programme. This initiative helped clinicians provide structured physical activity advice to inactive patients or those at risk of chronic disease.
The programme was adopted as a priority initiative by Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group between 2013 and 2015 and was implemented across more than 80 GP practices in the city.
Dr Shamji remains committed to helping patients recover from injury, improve function, and return safely to activity through tailored, evidence-based treatment and rehabilitation strategies.
Dr Shamji is passionate about musculoskeletal and sports medicine. He uses point of care ultrasound daily to enhance the understanding and management plan. He uses imaging to help guide injection treatments, including novel therapies, used to help support treatment of osteoarthritis, cartilage, tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries. He works closely with the rehabilitation team to plan and refine return to activity and sport programmes.
He has a special interest in the detailed diagnosis, prognosis and treatment options of all muscle injuries and has presented and published peer review research on hamstring injury. He has strong experience in managing overload injuries related to sport especially in the groin regio, bone stress and all tendon problems.
