Personal Profile

Adam Brooks has over twenty years’ experience as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip replacements.  During that time he has done over 2000 primary hip replacements and almost 500 revision hip replacements for the population of Swindon, Marlborough, North Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire.

His philosophy is simple; a total hip replacement as a treatment for osteoarthritis of the hip is one of the most predictable and effective health care interventions available in any speciality of medicine.  It must, however, be performed with the utmost attention to detail in order to restore the patient’s anatomy to its optimal position and so to achieve the best function, both in terms of biomechanics, pain relief and overall patient satisfaction.  He takes a methodical approach to pre-operative planning, using computerised-templating in order to plan the optimal size and placement of components in order to recreate your original anatomy.

Mr Brooks aims to ensure that every consultation is timed to allow him fully to assess your condition, to explain the options available to you and then to ensure that you are able to understand the risks and benefits of undergoing surgery, if appropriate.

He uses tried and tested implants, based principally on the philosophy of the Exeter Hip, the results of which have still not been bettered by any of the newer generations of femoral prostheses.  On the acetabular (socket) side, he uses either a titanium alloy press-fit socket, or a fully cemented polyethylene socket, coupled with a ceramic or stainless steel femoral head.  These combinations of implants have been shown in the UK’s National Joint Registry to carry excellent results, with more than 95% of replacements still unrevised 15 years after implantation.

He also performs revision hip replacement surgery for cases in which the original hip replacement has failed.  He uses a variety of techniques, including bone-grafting, trabecular metal shells and augments, as well as custom 3-D printed components, in order to suit the varied and specific problems with which patients present.

Adam Brooks qualified with BM BCh from Oxford University in 1990 and then became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 1994. After junior hospital posts, Adam returned to Oxford for his specialist orthopaedic training, gaining the FRCS (Tr & Orth) exam in 2000. He completed his training with a fellowship in Trauma and Arthroplasty at St Michael’s Hospital, Toronto in 2001.

He took up his consultant post at Great Western Hospital, Swindon, in 2002, where he was Clinical Director and Clinical Lead for Orthopaedics from 2006-13 and then Associate Medical Director from 2014-2022.  He was Chairman of the British Orthopaedic Directors Society from 2010-12 and a Trustee and elected Council member of the British Orthopaedic Association from 2014-16, serving on the Trauma and Professional Practice Committees.

He is a longstanding faculty member of AO, the international Trauma group, since 2005, and was chairman of Principles of Fracture Management Courses from 2014-16.
