Mr Ravikrishna Mamidanna is a Consultant General Surgeon with a specialist interest in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery including Obesity and Metabolic Surgery. His NHS practice is at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust and private practice is based at Circle Health Group, Blackheath Hospital.

After qualifying as a doctor, he underwent his basic and higher surgical training the United Kingdom. He also completed a specialist Royal College of Surgeons (London) fellowship in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery from Luton which is one of the highest volume centres in UK.

Clinical Expertise

Mr Mamidanna is an advanced laparoscopic surgeon (undertaking many complex keyhole operations). His general surgical practice includes keyhole operations for appendicitis, gallstone disease (cholecystectomy) and hernias. He offers open as well as keyhole (laparoscopic) repairs for umbilical, epigastric, ventral, incisional and groin hernias. He also undertakes keyhole surgery to manage hiatus hernia and acid reflux (fundoplication). His specialist interest includes surgical management of metabolic syndrome (problems associated with being overweight – such as diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension, high cholesterol/triglycerides). He currently leads the Bariatric Multi-disciplinary Team meetings at University Hospital Lewisham and regularly undertakes keyhole operations for weight-loss such as sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, one anastomosis gastric bypass and revisional procedures. He has performed over 2000 gastroscopy procedures (camera examination of stomach and food-pipe).

Training

Mr Mamidanna completed his higher surgical training in South-east London including Kent. He was fortunate to train under eminent surgeons in hospitals such as Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, Kings College Hospital, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, Medway Maritime Hospital and was awarded Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in 2019. He then undertook the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons Fellowship in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at Luton and Dunstable Hospital. Subsequently he was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at University Hospital Lewisham.

Teaching and Research

Mr Mamidanna is a trainer for junior and senior surgical trainees in South London. He regularly mentors junior doctors at all levels as an educational and clinical supervisor. Along with his clinical and teaching responsibilities, Mr Mamidanna actively takes part in research and has published extensively with over 40 articles in reputed journals. He has contributed to various large international multi-centre research studies. He undertook research at Imperial College London and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Mr Mamidanna keeps himself up to date by regularly attending academic and governance meetings and conferences. This helps him practice modern surgery including evidence-based medicine. He has delivered oral presentations at numerous international conferences. He regularly audits his work and is conscious of providing the highest quality of care to his patients. He believes in being able to deliver a smooth patient journey from the first consultation to the discharge after necessary follow-up reviews.

In his spare time, he enjoys playing and watching Cricket and is an avid photographer.
