About Dr Raveen Kandan

Personal Profile

Dr Raveen Kandan is a Consultant Cardiologist with a broad range of experience in all aspects of general and interventional cardiology. He works full time at the Royal United Hospital Bath and is part of the consultant team providing 24/7 emergency treatments for the regional heart attack service at the Bristol Heart Institute.

Raveen qualified from Bristol Medical School with Honours in 2005 and undertook postgraduate medical and cardiology training in the Southwest. His sub-specialty is coronary intervention - using drugs, balloons, and stents to treat coronary disease. He completed fellowships in Malaysia and Japan as part of his interventional training and has published review articles, authored book chapters, and presented internationally in this field.

Unique to other interventional cardiologists, Raveen has a strong foundation in echo cardiography (BSE accredited). He is part of the regional pulmonary hypertension team and is also dual accredited in General Internal Medicine. This broad range of expertise allows him to undertake a thorough and complete assessment of patients with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, fainting and other symptoms.

Raveen utilises contemporary, evidence-based techniques to achieve the best outcome for his patients. His practice is patient centred, with a strong emphasis on shared decision making. He strives to be accessible and approachable, and to communicate information in a clear and timely manner to patients and other healthcare professionals. He is clinical governance lead for cardiology at RUH Bath. In this role he has developed and supported numerous initiatives to improve patient safety, experience, quality and governance processes within his department and Trust.

Outside clinical and governance work, Raveen spends his time teaching and supporting students. He is a senior teaching associate with the University of Bristol, serving primarily as a clinical tutor for year 3 medical students. Raveen also organises an annual ‘Your Heart Hospital’ educational meeting for school students to teach them about heart disease, resuscitation and provide insight into careers in healthcare.

Raveen consistently receives excellent feedback at his annual appraisal:
Dr Kandan has clearly shown himself to be an outstanding colleague and Cardiologist. He has undertaken a good level of CPD and maintains high-level contemporary practice. He is actively involved with CG, quality improvement and teaching, and has received first-rate 360 feedback from both colleagues and patients, consistently scoring mainly "outstanding".
