Professor Ranee Thakar, MD, FRCOG, is a highly respected Consultant Obstetrician and Urogynaecologist based in London, with extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of pelvic floor and perineal conditions across a woman’s life course. She is also an Honorary Professor of Women’s Health at the University of Liverpool.
With many years of senior consultant practice, Professor Thakar specialises in caring for women with postnatal pelvic floor problems, bladder and bowel incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, perineal pain, and sexual dysfunction, as well as women experiencing pelvic floor symptoms around the menopause and later life. She offers both conservative, non-surgical treatments and advanced pelvic reconstructive surgery, tailoring care to each woman’s individual needs and priorities.
Professor Thakar served as President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) from December 2022 to 2025, reflecting her national and international leadership in women’s health. She was awarded the President’s Award for Outstanding Leadership by the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin in 2023. She is also a former President of the International Urogynaecological Association, which awarded her the Distinguished Service Award in 2022.
Her global reputation is reflected through honorary fellowships from leading professional bodies, including the Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Japanese College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons.
An internationally recognised authority on perineal trauma, Professor Thakar has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and has played a key role in advancing the prevention, assessment, and repair of obstetric anal sphincter injuries. She has also developed specialist training programmes for obstetricians, midwives, and multidisciplinary teams worldwide to improve maternal outcomes.
In her private practice, Professor Thakar is known for her calm, compassionate, and thorough approach. She places strong emphasis on listening, clear explanations, and shared decision-making, ensuring women feel supported when discussing sensitive and often life-impacting symptoms. She works closely with specialist pelvic floor physiotherapists and other colleagues, where appropriate, to provide comprehensive, joined-up care.
Training
Professor Thakar completed her basic medical training in India prior to moving to the UK. She obtained her MRCOG degree in 1994. Subsequently, she took up a research post in St George’s Hospital and Medical School. The research involved studying bowel, bladder and sexual function following hysterectomy. This led to a landmark paper which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine and to a Doctorate (MD) from the University of London. In 2001 she completed her subspecialty training in urogynaecology under the auspices of Professor Stuart Stanton.
