Personal Profile

A 1989 Guy’s Hospital Medical School (U.M.D.S) Clinical Medicine graduate, Dr. Kaprielian also attended Trinity College in Oxford for his undergraduate medical degree. He obtained a Masters degree from the University of London for his research work in the Cell Biology of Cardiac disease in 1998, for which he was awarded the prestigious University 1998 Roger’s Prize for his outstanding thesis. 

He trained in Cardiology on the North-West London Training rotation and worked at Hammersmith, Royal Brompton and Royal Free Hospitals.  He obtained his Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training in Cardiology with subspecialty interest in coronary intervention and in General Internal Medicine (GiM) from the General Medical Council in 2002. In 2006 he was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

Dr. Raffi Kaprielian was appointed in October 2002 as a Consultant Cardiologist at 2 leading London Teaching Hospitals. He holds joint NHS appointments at West Middlesex University Hospital (now Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust (NHSFT)), and Hammersmith Hospital (Imperial Hospitals NHS Trust). He worked as Clinical Director of Medicine at Chelsea and Westminster NHSFT for 4 years from 2016 after the merger of Chelsea and Westminster and West Middlesex Hospitals overseeing the integration of the 2 Departments into a single unit across the 2 hospital sites.   He is a Clinical Teacher and Educational Supervisor to both Imperial College School of Medicine undergraduates and in Clinical postgraduate programs.

He is trained in in Coronary Intervention, Pacing/Device Therapy and has clinical expertise in Echocardiography (both transthoracic and trans oesophageal studies) and General Cardiology.  Dr. Kaprielian holds a level 2 accreditation in performing and reporting coronary CT angiography.

Dr Kaprielian has published throughout his career. He has been an active contributor to the Imperial Hospitals NHS Trust coronary research team, with numerous recent publications in the field of coronary physiology and the use of the instantaneous free wave ratio (iFR) in assessment of coronary artery disease over the past 7 years. He has also published in the field of biological mechanisms of cardiac dysfunction from his cell biology MD thesis.  He has been Principal Investigator for multicentre research projects such as the series of Euroaspire Surveys and the Alecardio randomized clinical trial.

Dr Kaprielian has an active role in teaching.  He has co-designed and personally delivered international training programmes in the fields of Cardiology and Echocardiography.  This has included in person courses and more recently web-based seminars.
