Mr Praveen Kumar is a highly experienced and respected Consultant Ophthalmologist and Eye Surgeon based in Berkshire, providing specialist private eye care across Reading, Windsor, and the wider Berkshire region, offering expert private care at Circle Reading Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital (Windsor).

Mr. Kumar specialises in advanced and complex cataract surgery, including clear lens replacement, refractive lens exchange and the use of premium bespoke intraocular lenses such as toric, trifocal, multifocal, and extended depth of focus lenses, tailored to each patient’s visual needs and lifestyle.

Mr. Kumar has been an NHS consultant since 2009 and now holds senior consultant posts at the Royal Berkshire Hospital (Reading) and the Prince Charles Eye Unit (Windsor) with a strong reputation for clinical excellence and surgical expertise. He also runs dedicated laser clinic regularly performing retinal laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions as well as YAG laser capsulotomy, laser iridotomy and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty.

As Lead Consultant for Age-related Macular Degeneration at the Prince Charles Eye Unit, Mr. Kumar was instrumental in rolling various service improvement and innovations which plays a pivotal role in ensuring patients across Berkshire receive timely, expert, sight-saving treatment delivered to the highest clinical standards. Mr. Kumar and his team also manage complex referrals from fellow consultants across the region.

Mr Kumar has considerable experience in the assessment and management of acute and emergency eye conditions, ensuring patients receive prompt and effective treatment when urgent care is required. He is deft in treatment for Blepharitis, Dry Eyes, removal of lumps, cysts, skin tags from eye lids.

Mr Kumar graduated with an MBBS from the University of Madras before completing specialist ophthalmology training at the prestigious Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), where he was awarded both a Diploma as well as Masters degree in Ophthalmology. He subsequently completed a fellowship at the internationally renowned Aravind Eye Hospital, refining his expertise in cataract surgery and the management of complex retinal diseases. Having played an active role in the Lions Sight First Programme and Aravind Eye Hospitals’ outreach eye camps, Mr. Kumar has performed close to 30,000 eye procedures including cataract operations across a wide range of clinical settings over the past 35 years.

After completing an intensive residency programme and advanced specialist training at Aravind Eye Hospital, Mr Kumar went on to achieve the FRCS (Glasgow), FRCS (Edinburgh), and MRCOphth qualifications, reflecting his commitment to the highest standards of surgical excellence and professional development.

He began his UK career with a clinical attachment at  Moorfields Eye Hospital, London one of the world’s leading centres for eye care, before completing further specialist training at leading ophthalmic centres across the UK. This extensive training has provided him with broad expertise across all aspects of ophthalmology and has helped shape his reputation as a highly skilled and versatile eye surgeon. Mr. Kumar further strengthened his surgical expertise through an additional fellowship in complex cataract surgery in Jersey.

Mr. Kumar is widely regarded for his meticulous surgical technique, calm clinical judgement, and ability to manage both routine and highly complex eye conditions with confidence. Apart from being a GMC-recognised trainer, Mr. Kumar also serves as College Tutor, and Clinical Supervisor, as he is passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of eye specialists, reflecting his standing as both a senior clinician and respected educator.
