About Prasad Rao

Personal Profile

Mr Prasad Rao is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working across King’s Mill Hospital and Newark General Hospital for the past three years. He specialises in complex knee surgery and hip replacements, with additional expertise in a wide range of orthopaedic procedures.

Mr Rao earned his MBBS from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and completed his Basic Surgical Training in Cardiff, achieving Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS). He undertook Higher Surgical Training in Trauma and Orthopaedics through a National Training Number from the West Midlands Deanery, rotating through Oswestry, Stoke, and Birmingham. During this time, he successfully attained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Tr&Orth).

He completed a 14-month Trauma Fellowship at Cardiff and Vale University Hospitals, one of the UK’s busiest trauma centres, under the mentorship of Mr Mohanty and Mr Lewis.

Mr Rao further enhanced his subspecialty skills through prestigious Hip and Knee Fellowships at Warwick University Teaching Hospitals, working with Mr Steve Young and Mr Faisal (Depuy Hip Arthroplasty Fellowship), and Mr Robertson and Mr Wood (Depuy Soft Tissue & Knee Arthroplasty and Revision Fellowship). His passion for soft tissue knee surgery led to a travelling fellowship in Porto, Portugal, under the renowned Dr Alcindo Silva, and a further revision knee fellowship with Dr Thorsten Gherke at the world-famous Endo-Clinic in Hamburg.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Rao is actively involved in research and holds an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University. He is committed to medical education, serving as an undergraduate trainer for Nottingham University medical students and a clinical tutor for junior doctors and registrars on the Nottingham training rotation.

Within the NHS, Mr Rao holds several leadership roles. He is the Clinical Governance Lead for his department and hospital, Datix Lead for the Trust, and chairs the Mortality and Morbidity meetings in collaboration with surgical and trust leadership. He also sits on the Radiation Protection Committee, working closely with leads at Nottingham University Hospitals and Nottinghamshire Community Services.
