Dr Petr Ruzicka

Consultant Cardiologist

About Dr Petr Ruzicka

Personal Profile

Dr Petr Ruzicka is a Consultant Cardiologist within Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest cardiac centres in the UK. He is based at Trafford General Hospital and delivers cardiology services across the Trust, including outpatient clinics in Altrincham and specialist cardiac CT work at Wythenshawe Hospital. He also contributes to acute inpatient care as part of the Consultant of the Week rota at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

In addition to his NHS role, Dr Ruzicka provides private consultations at The Alexandra Hospital, offering timely access to expert cardiology assessment without waiting lists. All patients attending his clinic undergo a same-day ECG as part of their initial evaluation, ensuring an efficient and structured diagnostic approach from the outset.

Dr Ruzicka has extensive experience in general cardiology, with a particular focus on the assessment of chest pain and the use of cardiac CT. He performs CT coronary angiography regularly and has a strong interest in its role as a first-line investigation for suspected coronary artery disease. His practice emphasises accurate diagnosis, appropriate use of investigations, and clear, evidence-based management plans.

He qualified in medicine in 1997 and completed specialist training in general medicine and cardiology in 2000 and 2004 respectively, achieving distinction in cardiology. He was awarded a PhD in 2005 for research into transcatheter treatment of atrial septal defects. Since moving to the UK in 2007, he has worked as a Consultant Cardiologist within Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2011 and has received multiple Clinical Excellence Awards in recognition of his contribution to patient care.

Dr Ruzicka manages a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, including chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness and blackouts, as well as established conditions such as coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, heart failure and valvular heart disease. He is committed to providing clear explanations and practical management plans that patients can understand and follow with confidence.

A key principle of his practice is to recommend only those investigations and treatments that are genuinely in the patient’s best interests. Where appropriate, this may include reassurance and avoidance of unnecessary investigations. This pragmatic and patient-centred approach is valued by patients seeking balanced, independent clinical advice.

Dr Ruzicka is known for his approachable manner and efficient communication. Clinic letters are typically sent within 24 hours of consultation, ensuring both patients and referring clinicians receive clear and timely information.
