About Mr Peter Mekhail

Personal Profile

Mr Peter Mekhail is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. He is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen Medical School.

He specialises in upper gastrointestinal surgery. His expertise includes:

  • bariatric (weight loss) surgery such as gastric bypass
  • gastric band
  • sleeve gastrectomy
  • intragastric balloon procedures.
  • anti-reflux surgery.
  • In addition, he carries out a range of general surgical procedures. These include keyhole surgery, abdominal wall hernia repairs, and gallbladder removal.

He qualified in medicine (MBChB) in 2001. He completed his basic surgical training in England and Wales, followed by higher surgical training in Aberdeen.

Mr Mekhail was awarded a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in bariatric and complex laparoscopic upper gastrointestinal surgery. He completed this fellowship at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Somerset – the first bariatric Centre of Excellence outside the USA. During this time, he developed extensive experience in complex weight loss and upper gastrointestinal procedures.

Mr Mekhail is actively involved in medical education at the University of Aberdeen. He completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education in 2018.
