Peter McDonald MBBS MS FRCS was trained University College London and qualified in 1975. His postgraduate training in General Surgery in was in London (St. Mark’s Hospital), Barnet, Oxford, Northampton, Winchester, Basingstoke and Cleveland, Ohio. He was a lecturer in the University of Southampton from 1984 to 1991. He was appointed a Consultant Surgeon in Gastrointestinal Disorders at Northwick Park Hospital in 1991& at St. Mark’s in 1993.

Running a busy NHS practice at Northwick Park Hospital he was also Consulting Gastrointestinal Surgeon to Harefield Hospital and conducted a busy private practice at the Clementine Churchill Hospital and Bishops Wood Hospital. He set up the surgical emergency rota at the Clementine Churchill Hospital. 

He has a special interest in colorectal cancer and Crohn’s Disease, proctological disorders, hernia and gall bladder surgery. He is an active endoscopist and colonoscopist and he ran national training courses in colonoscopy in the early 1980s and continues to offer endoscopy services to his patients. He continues to work very closely with both his surgical colleagues as well as the gastroenterologists.  Multidisciplinary care has major benefits for patients and he never hesitates to get a ‘second opinion’ when needed.

He has published more than 70 scientific papers and several book chapters. He has given lectures in more than 25 countries in Europe and overseas. He has been active in Paediatric General Surgery and runs a day care service at Central Middlesex Hospital. He now in addition operates at Ealing Hospital on day care proctological patients.

He has been Clinical Director in Surgery, College Tutor for Royal College Surgeons of England, Sub-Dean St. Mark’s Hospital, Honorary Editor of the Royal Society of Medicine, President of the Section of Surgery of the Royal Society of Medicine, President of the St. Mark’s Association, Chairman of the Medical Staff Committee at Northwick Park & St. Mark’s and is currently Chairman of the Northwest London Paediatric Surgery Network. He is a non-Executive Director of the MDDUS (2009 - ) and of St. Philips Care Home Group (2018 -) and on the Board of two independent schools in Staffordshire.
