About Mr Paul Haslam

Personal Profile

Mr Haslam qualified in 1994 from Sheffield University and completed surgical training in the South Yorkshire region. He then undertook fellowships in Melbourne, Auckland and Sydney to complete his specialist training, returning to the UK in 2006 to take up his NHS post at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

During his training, Mr Haslam co-authored an undergraduate textbook on Orthopaedic Surgery which sold over 10,000 copies worldwide.

Mr Haslam has now been a Consultant for over 19 years and has developed a comprehensive knee service including an acute knee clinic aimed at treating sportsmen and women with traumatic knee injuries. He also regularly performs total and partial knee replacements. Mr Haslam is now a very experienced surgeon having now performed well over 2,000 knee replacements and 1,500 anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions.

Mr Haslam offers VELYS Robotic-Assisted Surgery at Thornbury Hospital. To learn more about VELYS Robotic Assisted Surgery with Mr Haslam, view the recorded online patient event located at the bottom of the website profile.

He has been actively involved in training at all levels, including supervising elective medical students, helping to establish the ACP programme and acting as Educational Supervisor for junior doctors.

Mr Haslam taught knee examination techniques nationally for 10 years and has been invited to join faculty on a number of national courses, most recently the 2nd international Paediatric Knee course in Sheffield.

Together with colleagues from around the region, Mr Haslam helped to develop an international training programme helping surgeons from Jamaica, Sri Lanka and India gain experience in knee surgery.

Mr Haslam currently has a senior surgical trainee working with him to gain experience in arthroscopic knee surgery and trains the Paediatric Knee Fellow at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. His training credentials are recognised with him being awarded Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer from the University of Sheffield.

In 2019, Mr Haslam joined the knee team at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. He joined an established regional and national service aimed at treating congenital and traumatic knee conditions in children. The Knee Unit at SCH developed the national guidelines for the treatment of paediatric ACL injuries. He is now involved in numerous research projects in SCH, particularly in congenial cruciate ligament deficiency.

Mr Haslam is committed to the NHS, demonstrating this by taking up important posts within his NHS Trust including Clinical Tutor, Clinical Lead, Enhanced Recovery Lead and most recently Clinical Director. As Clinical Director during the COVID pandemic, Mr Haslam was responsible for the department’s response to the pandemic overseeing rota changes and ensuring safe medical staffing levels on the wards and in A&E.

Mr Haslam keeps up to date with the latest developments in knee surgery by attending courses, visiting other centres and attending MDT meetings, both locally and nationally. Prior to the pandemic, he visited Toulouse to observe paediatric ACL techniques. He regularly participates in audit and research and whilst he was Clinical Director, introduced an MDT meeting in both his NHS and private practice. The primary purpose of this meeting is to ensure patient safety by continually peer-reviewing patient x-rays before and after surgery.

Mr Haslam actively seeks feedback from his patients and reviews his outcomes, always looking for ways to improve his service.

Outside of work, Mr Haslam coaches football, plays golf and likes to walk his dog.
