About Mr Paul Bachoo

Personal Profile

In 2001 Mr. Paul Bachoo completed his specialist training in Vascular Surgery. His training included placements at leading centres across England (Newcastle and London), Europe (University Medical Centre Groningen in the Netherlands and Örebro Hospital in Sweden), and North America (Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston). Following this, he was appointed as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon in Aberdeen.

Over the years, Mr Bachoo has made significant contributions to vascular surgery in the region:

• He developed and established the Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) service, covering abdominal, thoracic, and complex aortic aneurysms (EVAR, TRVAR, FEVAR). This work led to Aberdeen participating in several national and international clinical trials.

• He introduced Endovenous treatments for varicose veins at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI). Through training workshops and collaboration with the wider vascular community, this technique was adopted across all Scottish vascular centres.

• Aberdeen Royal Infirmary later became the lead site for a Multicentre UK HTA RCT (CLASS), funded by a £2 million grant, comparing endovenous techniques with traditional surgery.

Mr Bachoo has also been active in research and education. He served as a CSO Research Fellow in Health Service Research Unit at the University of Aberdeen and has supervised numerous postgraduate theses. He has helped shape various professional roles in the field and has been involved in several professional societies.

Currently, Mr Bachoo holds a senior leadership role within NHS Grampian, alongside his clinical responsibilities.

To date, he has authored over 50 publications, presented at numerous national and international conferences, and has helped secure over £1.76 million in research funding.
