About Parul Shah

Personal Profile

Dr Shah is an established Consultant Physician in integrated medicine with a special interest in falls and syncope in older people.

She has worked as a Consultant Physician in General internal medicine and elderly medicine at Northampton General Hospital from 2004 to 2020 and now runs a weekly private practice from Three Shires Hospital and St Andrews Healthcare.

As Lead clinician for falls, Dr Shah was instrumental in developing the Orthogeriatric service (managing patients with fracture neck of femur) and community falls services in south of Northamptonshire. She was also Lead for the service for Elderly medicine, co-chair for Falls Prevention Steering Group and Lead Clinician for Tilt table service for the trust.

Dr Shah has experience of managing patients admitted on acute care of elderly wards or rehabilitation wards and will see patients for the majority of general geriatric concerns as part of her outpatient consultation service.

In addition to her clinical work Dr Shah also enjoys teaching undergraduate students and junior doctors. She achieved accreditation from The Royal College as an Associate Fellow of Higher Education Academy in 2013 and has been an Appraiser for consultant colleagues and staff grade doctors at Northampton General Hospital.

As part of her on-going practice Dr Shah would like to utilise the knowledge, experience and skills that she has gained in the secondary care setting at Northampton General Hospital to improve management of multi-morbidity and frailty in the community, by offering outpatient clinics at Three shires hospital.

She would also like to embed the practice of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) for people living with mild, moderate or severe frailty. Comprehensive geriatric assessment results in holistic and patient centred care whilst allowing for shared decision making with patients and the family. It also provides an opportunity to prevent polypharmacy, deconditioning and falls whilst facilitating improvement in the quality of life.

Dr Shah will provide an expert opinion for the suitability of surgical intervention in older people living with frailty and will also provide a tailored programme to optimise fitness prior to surgical or oncology treatment by providing joint session with physiotherapist.
