Dr Paskaran holds dual accreditation in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine and the entirety of his post-graduate training has been in London. He has worked at some of the most prestigious hospitals in the country including the Liver Unit at King’s College Hospital and the renowned Lennard-Jones Intestinal Failure Unit at St Mark’s Hospital in Harrow. Prior to taking up his Consultant post at Croydon University Hospital, he was the Senior Registrar at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. Whilst in specialist training, he pursued a higher degree in management at the London Business School and was awarded a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in 2012.
Clinical Interests
Dr Paskaran has clinical interest in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Nutrition/Intestinal Failure, Functional GI Disorders – including IBS - and Liver Disease. He has undertaken research in IBD and Nutrition and published and presented both nationally and internationally. He has been the Head of Service for Endoscopy at Croydon University Hospital since 2014 and has twice successfully led the Unit’s 5-year re-accreditation process by the Joint Advisory Group (JAG), the national body that oversees excellence in Endoscopy.
Quality and Comfort in Endoscopy
As an endoscopist, Dr Paskaran prioritises quality in all aspects of Endoscopy service delivery and places paramount importance on patient comfort during the Endoscopy journey. Colonoscopy in particular which is an examination of the large intestine to investigate disease or cancers of that organ can be a difficult and uncomfortable procedure for patients. However, with excellent technique combined with good communication skills and the latest in modern technology, it is a very safe and well tolerated procedure. In 2016, Dr Paskaran working in collaboration with Pentax Medical helped launch the ScopePilot navigation system, a tool that allows the Endoscopist to see the shape of the scope in the patient’s body in real time. This greatly helps in manoeuvring through challenging areas called loops and ensures a comfortable and successful procedure.
Complex Polyp Service
Dr Paskaran also leads the Complex Polyp Team at Croydon University Hospital which receives referrals from across the Southwest London region for removal of large polyps and early cancers of the GI Tract. He is an expert in all aspects of luminal endoscopic resection including Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and is one of only a very few practitioners nationally with expertise in the advanced organ-preserving modality that is known as Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD). Dr Paskaran also sees patients in the private sector who have been referred for EMR or ESD.
Educational Roles
Teaching and training are also integral to Dr Paskaran’s practice and he has been a tutor and examiner at Imperial College London Medical School and at King’s College Medical School. He is also a member of the Training Board for South Thames Gastroenterology and serves as the Educational Lead for GI trainees at Croydon University Hospital. During his tenure, Croydon has consistently ranked as one of the top hospitals for Endoscopic training for both Physicians and Surgeons in South London.
Advanced Endoscopic Training
As an expert in Colonoscopy and all aspects of Polypectomy including Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection, Dr Paskaran is sought after and regularly trains Consultant colleagues from the Southwest London Region and beyond in the techniques of EMR and ESD. In 2019, he became one of the founding members of the Pentax Forward Programme, a European wide initiative to train and develop ESD skill sets across UK and Europe. Since that time Dr Paskaran has worked with colleagues in Europe and the Middle East to develop ESD as the gold standard of care for treating Colorectal polyps and early cancers.
Beyond his clinical interests, Dr Paskaran also has a great passion for ensuring excellence in healthcare provision and delivering services that are patient-centred. Much of the work Dr Paskaran undertakes as a Consultant focuses on driving innovations that improve the quality of care as well as redesigning services to better meet patient needs.
In his spare time Dr Paskaran enjoys reading, ice hockey, skiing, travelling abroad and spending time with his family. He is also an avid golfer and fervently wishes to one day own a scratch handicap.
