Personal Profile

Dr Panagiotis Koliou is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust.  He specialises in the treatment of breast cancer and melanoma.

Training and Appointment


Dr Koliou graduated in Medicine at the University of Ioannina, Greece. Dr Koliou also holds an honours degree in Biochemistry from Benedictine University, USA.  After completing his undergraduate degree, he progressed on to a master’s degree in Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology which he gained from the University of Surrey, UK. He was awarded his PhD in Medical Oncology in 2016 with First Class honours.

He completed his training in medical oncology at both Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and University College London Hospital.

Research and publications


Dr Koliou’s clinical and research interests are in the field of breast cancer and melanoma. He is active in research and leads on a number of breast cancer clinical trials as principal investigator.  
His clinical  research interests include prognostic and predictive biomarkers, angiogenesis, and the combination of immunotherapy with drugs and novel compounds.

He has participated in a number of trials and has presented his findings at conferences worldwide. He has published in international medical journals.

Current Practice


Dr Koliou currently works at St Luke’s Cancer Centre, Guildford, where he is researching the use of immunotherapy to treat breast cancer and melanoma as part of the virtual Surrey Cancer Research Institute.  Immunotherapy potentially uses more targeted and less aggressive therapies to the benefit of patients.

He is a trustee for the charity, Topic of Cancer, which raised funds to directly support the work of the cancer immunotherapy research group at the University of Surrey.
