Dr Omay Lee is a Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist and Physician specialising in neuromuscular disorders, peripheral nerve diseases and epilepsy.
Her NHS practice is at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust London and Royal Surrey County Hospital Guildford. At the Royal Surrey Hospital she is also the Consultant Lead Physician for her Specialty and also supervises the electrophysiology diagnostic service.
Dr Lee undertook her undergraduate medical degree at the University of Cambridge, with an intercalated degree in Natural Sciences, completing her clinical training in London. She then undertook foundation training at the Wessex deanery with medical and surgical rotations in Southampton General Hospital, then postgraduate core and higher training in Edinburgh with posts in psychiatry, general acute and internal medicine, and neurology, working at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, Western General Hospital & Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. She then completed a clinical research fellowship at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, undertaking basic laboratory research and next generation sequencing/computational analysis in neurodevelopmental genetics. She then completed higher specialist training in Clinical Neurophysiology in London at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Great Ormond Street Hospital, which included experience in both Neurophysiology and Neurology, with a CCT in Clinical Neurophysiology.
Dr Lee is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey Medical School, and is actively involved in teaching medical students. She also trains junior doctors. She became of the Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2023. She has many professional memberships and affiliations including British Society of Clinical Neurophysiology (BSCN), Association of British Neurologists (ABN) and British Peripheral Nerve Society (BPNS).
As a neurophysiology physician, Dr Lee sees patients and performs and interprets investigations which record electrical activity from the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles in order to aid diagnosis of neurological conditions. She explains the findings of the technical tests in easy to understand language, to help guide onwards management for patients.
At Mount Alvernia Hospital, Dr Lee provides a full neuromuscular electrodiagnostic service using EMG and nerve conduction studies. She commonly assesses patients with acute or chronic nerve and muscle conditions, including entrapment neuropathies, nerve root problems, peripheral neuropathies, myasthenia gravis, as well as more rare nerve and muscle conditions. She also provides EEG diagnostic evaluation of patients with existing and suspected epilepsy as well as other neurological disorders including encephalopathies. She also provides other specialist tests to assess the function of the brain pathways and spinal cord. Dr Lee typically sees patients referred from GPs and Consultants/Specialists.
