About Omar Malik

Personal Profile

Dr Omar Malik has over 20 years' experience in a wide range of general neurological conditions.  He also has a specialist interest in inflammatory disorders of the peripheral and central nervous system.  His expertise is in multiple sclerosis, neuro-inflammation, strokes and headaches.

Training and Appointment

Dr Omar Malik attended King's College Medical School, London.  He gained five distinctions there, before obtaining his PhD from Cambridge University.

He was appointed Consultant Neurologist at Hillingdon and Charing Cross Hospitals in 2001.  Whilst there, he combined a busy clinical neurological practice with ongoing academic interests in Clinical Neurosciences.

Research and Publications

Dr Malik manages the leading centre for multiple sclerosis treatments and multiple sclerosis clinical trials in the UK at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is also actively involved in research. He has been previously involved in scientific research as a Clinical Research Fellow in demyelinating diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS).

He is widely published and appears in numerous peer-reviewed publications. His most recent research papers have been:

  • “A diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis following whiplash injury: Is there a true association?”
  • “Development of autoimmune thyroid disease in Multiple Sclerosis patients post-alemtuzumab improves treatment response.”

Dr Malik is a trustee of the Multiple Sclerosis Trials Collaboration (MSTC), which was set up in 2004, to enable access to treatments and research for people living with MS.  MSTC aims to provide MS patients with access to pharmaceutical-sponsored clinical trials, if they are not suitable for current therapies.

The organisation also aims to undertake pharmaceutical clinical trials to devise and administer research-led clinical trials.  In turn, these offer greater access to potential treatments to a wider number of MS patients.

He teaches regularly in his capacity as Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College School of Medicine.  He is also Clinical Director of The UK Multiple Sclerosis Tissue Bank which allows people to donate their brain and spinal cord tissue for MS research after their death. This vital resource helps scientists around the world advance their understanding of MS, through donations of tissue.

Awards and Prizes

Dr Malik was listed in the top 25 winners of their first UK Top Doctors Awards in 2018.  These awards recognise outstanding medical talent and the highest level of care in private and public healthcare.  They are recognised by fellow doctors and specialists and have been running for a decade in the USA and since 2014 within Europe and Latin America.

The 25 winners were selected from nearly 2000 nominations across London.  They recognise the specialists who doctors themselves would go to in times of need, and who they would trust with their own health or that of their family.

Current Practice

Dr Malik offers a regular clinic for outpatients at Mount Alvernia Hospital.  In addition, he is one of the multi-disciplinary team of specialists who have formed the Long Covid Clinic at Mount Alvernia Hospital.  It was launched in March 2021 to support and treat patients suffering with the long-term effects of Covid 19. It offers each patient a bespoke treatment package, with input from a variety of specialists, who will meet on a monthly basis to review patient progress.
