In 1998, Nishal Patel graduated in Medicine with several prize honors in surgery at the Royal Free Hospital and School of Medicine. This led to gaining further ophthalmic experience and training which he received at centres of excellence at prominent well-respected establishments such as Moorfields Eye Hospital and King’s College Hospital and School of Medicine. Through the mentorship and guidance from recognized London based professorial experts and surgeons in their fields nationally and internationally, he was able to build a solid foundation in ocular surgery. The research he carried out at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London in the field of Age Related Macular Degeneration in 2003 resulted in several publications in multiple international and national journals. He was bestowed with esteemed recognition from the Royal Society of Medicine leading to award of Doctorate in Medicine from University of London in 2005. On completion of the Royal College of Ophthalmology Fellowship training in London in 2008, he successfully was appointed as the first National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Lecturer in London at University College London. This enabled him to develop into an international global expert in the field of cataract surgery and retinal diseases through collaborations in USA and Japan, attracting grant funding for novel innovations in surgery and carrying out clinical research with commercial sponsors.

Mr Patel has established his reputation as a world recognized ophthalmologist at local, regional, national and international levels, presenting his excellent outcomes of surgery and novel techniques at the cutting edge of technology in the field of Ophthalmology. He continues to provide a comprehensive general and specialist ophthalmic service locally and is frequently asked to provide patient led discussions from organizations such as the Macular Society and the Kent Association for the Blind (KAB) on an annual basis. He has set up clinical trials within the local NHS Trust and is a chief investigator in several local and multi-center trials for conditions affecting the eye such as cataract and eye retinal diseases.

As an experienced surgeon, he is a specialist in cataract surgery, lens replacement surgery and intraocular lens implantation with both monofocal and multifocal lens technology. This allows patients with routine and complex surgical needs to have the best qualified surgeon to discuss their procedures with a balanced neutral outcome that be mutually appropriate. He has been involved in lens surgery for over 20 years with knowledge of benefits and risks from most commonly used manufacturers of prosthetic implants. This has often meant teaching senior experienced and junior surgeons on techniques of surgery. This indicates that he is able to manage most complex cases that he encounters in his practice. He is highly skilled and qualified in specialist retinal diseases particularly age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, uveitis (iritis) and genetic retinal diseases having significant experience in laser and injection therapy.

The care provided to patients by him enables patients with singular or co-existing ocular diseases to be managed as a whole with a patient centric approach. This allows gives patients a greater level of confidence with Mr Patel as he can demonstrate and interact on a humane level. He customizes care and ensures treatments are carried out in a convenient timely manner.
