About Dr Nisar Shah

Dr Shah qualified in 1998 from Pakistan and trained as a general physician. He completed his postgraduate specialist training in General (Internal) Medicine before moving to UK. Whilst in UK, he opted for additional training in General Medicine, before starting training in Cardiology. Dr Shah always aspired to be a cardiologist and has had his cardiology training, spanning over a decade, in various cardiac centres throughout the UK. He has a breadth of experience working in general cardiology in District General Hospitals and tertiary care cardiac centres. During his training, he had the opportunity to train under some of the leading cardiologists and has been fortunate to acquire wealth of experience of managing a wide variety of complex cardiac conditions.
Dr Shah’s subspecialty training has been in heart failure and complex implantable cardiac devices. He has extensive training in both, and regarded as an experienced operator of cardiac implantable devices having received majority of his complex cardiac devices training at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.
Dr Shah has been working as a Consultant Cardiologist in Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust since August 2019. He sees the full spectrum of General Cardiology and also runs specialist services in his main subspecialty interests including diagnosis and management of heart failure, cardiomyopathies, heart rhythm problems and recurrent blackouts. Dr Shah performs complex procedures such as permanent (single and dual chamber) pacemaker, cardiac defibrillators and biventricular device implantations, in addition to the routine cardiac procedures such as tilt table testing, cardioversions and implantable cardiac monitors. Dr Shah leads syncope service at Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust.
Dr Shah is passionate about teaching and has been actively involved in training Aston Medical School’s undergraduate students, postgraduate teaching and training of junior doctors and nurses. Besides teaching, he is keen on use of quality improvement tools and matrices both for providing patient focused clinical care and improving quality of training. He has also been involved in a number of research projects and has published in peer reviewed journals.
Dr Shah is multilingual and consultations can be had in Punjabi, Urdu, Potohari and Hindi. Dr Shah regularly contributes in charitable work and helps raising funds for charitable organisations in developing world. He likes to spend his spare time with family and enjoys playing badminton, cricket and squash.
Dr Shah is available for consultations at The Priory Hospital in Birmingham. If you have complex health problems, then it is advisable to bring a referral letter from your GP to facilitate consultation. However, he is happy to provide consultation without a referral letter if you wish to do so.
