Personal Profile

Professor Nigel Wheeldon has been qualified for over 35 years, and a Consultant Cardiologist for over 25 years.

He is the Clinical Director for Cardiothoracic Services at the South Yorkshire Cardiothoracic Centre, having been the Clinical Lead in Cardiology for the previous 7 years. Over the years he has worked extensively with national bodies such as NHS England, British Heart Foundation and the UK Association for Inherited Cardiac Conditions.

Professor Wheeldon has extensive experience of working internationally and has worked in many cardiac centre's across Asia for over 20 years. He also holds a Commercial Pilots License and is an Authorised Cardiologist for the Civil Aviation Authority.

Clinical Interests

  • Inherited cardiac conditions, such as cardiomyopathy (hypertrophic, dilated, arrhythmogenic and rare forms)
  • Inherited arrhythmia (Long QT, Brugada Syndrome, CPVT)
  • Inherited aortic disease (aneurysm and dissection)
  • Familial cholesterol problems (Familial Hypercholesterolaemia)
He has extensive experience of managing coronary artery disease (chest pain, angina, heart attack) and has performed around 6000 coronary angioplasty procedures and a very large number of coronary angiograms. He manages heart valve and heart rhythm abnormalities (not ablation or pacemaker implantation).
