About Mr Nicholas Ward
Personal Profile
Mr Nicholas Ward is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist interest in the foot and ankle. He was appointed as an orthopaedic consultant at Frimley Health NHS Trust in 2010.
He graduated from the University of Leeds Medical School in 1996 and having joined the Army he spent 2 years in Germany looking after soldiers and their families. In combination with his NHS and private work, he also served abroad as an orthopaedic consultant in Northern Ireland, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and with the UN in South Sudan.
Mr Ward retired from the Army in 2022 to continue with his NHS and private work.
Education and Training
University of Leeds Medical School degree with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) 1996.
His basic surgical training was carried out at Frimley Park Hospital before entering higher specialist orthopaedic training in Wessex and in Oxford Deanery. He is fellowship trained, having undertaken specialist foot and ankle fellowships in Oxford, at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre under Mr Paul Cooke, and in Portsmouth.
He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Trauma & Orthopaedics) in 2008.
Academic contributions
Mr Ward has lectured on foot and ankle surgical problems and solutions both nationally and internationally. He has published papers both from foot and ankle surgery and trauma within international journals. He has also contributed to foot and ankle elements of orthopaedic textbooks.
Personal interests
Outside of work Mr Ward enjoys running, road cycling, and hill walking. (In his younger years he climbed Mont Blanc). He is an avid rugby fan and helps at Reading Rams RFC on the medical side, as well as supporting his sons who also play there.

Clinical Interests
Within the NHS Mr Ward works across the whole spectrum of foot and ankle work including elective work and trauma. During his time in the Army, he was particularly exposed to the foot and ankle trauma and sports injuries that serving personnel would often sustain. He worked closely with rehabilitation doctors and physiotherapists to return these personnel back to fitness.
In addition to this work, within the NHS he is also part of a multi-disciplinary team caring for diabetic foot problems and the challenges they bring.
His specialist interests are in arthroscopic surgery, forefoot surgery (bunions, arthritis, neuromas et cetera), foot and ankle sports injuries, heel pain, and general arthritic conditions throughout the foot and ankle. He has a particular interest in managing isolated cartilage injury.
Not every foot and ankle problem is resolved through surgery, and so Mr Ward also works closely with physiotherapists and orthotic specialists to find nonoperative solutions.
When surgery is required, the majority of patients are managed on a day case basis, being able to return home on the same day as the surgery. Larger procedures may necessitate an overnight stay, but the aim is to get most patients home within a day or two. Mr Ward is keen for his patients to weight-bear as soon as is practically possible, to aid their recovery and mobility.
