Dr Nick Davison is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and General Physician at Croydon University Hospital, providing specialist care for a wide range of digestive and gastrointestinal conditions with an expertise in inflammatory bowel disease, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, and disorders of the small bowel. He combines detailed clinical assessment with a calm, approachable and patient-centred manner, taking time to listen carefully, explain findings clearly and involve patients in decisions about their care.
Dr Davison assesses and treats a broad range of digestive symptoms and gastrointestinal conditions. These include abdominal pain, acid reflux and heartburn, indigestion, difficulty swallowing, nausea and vomiting, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), coeliac disease, iron-deficiency anaemia, gastrointestinal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, colonic polyps and suspected gastrointestinal cancer.
He has a particular clinical interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. As Lead for the IBD Service at Croydon University Hospital, he chairs both the IBD Multidisciplinary Team meeting and the IBD Advanced Therapies meeting. He established a dedicated advanced therapies clinic for patients receiving biologic and other specialist treatments. His approach combines careful diagnosis, evidence-based treatment and close collaboration with specialist nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, radiologists and surgeons.
Dr Davison is a JAG-certified endoscopist in both gastroscopy and colonoscopy and is also a JAG-accredited trainer. He performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. He places particular emphasis on procedural safety, patient comfort and high-quality examination.
His advanced endoscopic expertise includes oesophageal /pyloric /ileo-colonic dilatation, insertion of nasojejunal and nasogastric tubes, PEG insertion, colonic polypectomies, wireless small bowel capsule endoscopy, treatment of intestinal bleeding, push enteroscopy and double balloon enteroscopy. He also participates in the emergency gastrointestinal bleeding service.
Dr Davison leads the capsule endoscopy and double-balloon enteroscopy service at Croydon University Hospital. Capsule endoscopy uses a small swallowed camera to examine areas of the small bowel that cannot usually be seen during conventional gastroscopy or colonoscopy. He has expanded this service approximately fourfold and developed a robust double-balloon enteroscopy service, allowing more detailed investigation and treatment of small-bowel disorders.
Dr Davison graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and completed specialist training in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine through the South London programme. His training included specialist experience in inflammatory bowel disease and nutrition at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals and in hepatology and liver transplantation at King's College Hospital.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Davison has a strong commitment to medical education and quality improvement. He teaches medical students, junior doctors and gastroenterology trainees, provides procedural supervision and is a JAG accredited trainer in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. His audit and improvement work has included projects in endoscopy, gastroenterology referral pathways and acute medical care, with findings presented at regional and national meetings.
Patients value Dr Davison's thoughtful and practical approach. He reviews symptoms, previous investigations and treatments carefully, then explains the available options in clear, straightforward language. His aim is to provide timely diagnosis and an individualised treatment plan while avoiding unnecessary investigations and interventions.
