About Dr Niall Keenan

Personal Profile

Dr Keenan is a Consultant Cardiologist at West Herts Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College, London.

He qualified from Oxford University in 2001 and then trained in cardiology in London. He carried out specialised training and research in cardiac MRI at the Royal Brompton Hospital, in cardiac CT at the London Chest Hospital, and in echocardiography at Hammersmith Hospital in London, and also at Hopital Bichat in Paris. He has also undertaken advanced heart failure training at Harefield Hospital.

At West Herts NHS Trust he is Divisional Director for Medicine. He was previously Clinical Director for Interventional Medicine and Associate Medical Director for Quality and Innovation.

He is President-Elect of the British Society of CMR (BSCMR) and led a recent study of the state of CMR in the UK.

Since 2020 he has been a member of the Scientific Documents (Guidelines) Committee of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI).

He has been Clinical Lead for the prize winning South and West Herts HCP Virtual Ward. He chairs the NHS England East of England Clinical Advisory Group for Virtual Wards, and sits on the NHS England National Steering Group for Virtual Wards.

Dr Keenan sees patients with the full range of cardiological problems including coronary artery disease, hypertension, and arrhythmia. He has a particular interests in heart failure, valvular heart disease, cardio-oncology (cardiac issues arising during cancer treatment), and assessment for cardiac fitness to undergo anaesthesia/surgery. He sees patients with symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations and blackouts. Non-invasive testing includes echocardiography, stress echocardiography, cardiac CT, and cardiac MRI including CMR stress perfusion.

He emphasises a caring and holistic approach, focused on the individual, with an emphasis on carefully listening to the patient, a thorough assessment, clear explanations, and shared decision making.
