About Dr Nelson Amaral

Dr Personal Profile

Are you experiencing worrying heart symptoms — or have you been told you have an abnormal test result?
If any of these sound familiar, you are in the right place.

How Dr Amaral Will Work With You
When you are worried about your heart, the last thing you need is a rushed appointment or medical jargon. Dr Nelson Amaral is a senior London Consultant Cardiologist and Associate Professor at University College London (UCL) with over 20 years of clinical experience. He combines warm, unhurried care with the highest level of diagnostic precision:
  1. You Will Be Heard, Never Rushed: Dr Amaral starts by listening carefully to your story—unpacking your exact symptoms, lifestyle, smartwatch or health-check printouts, and family history.
  2. A Clear, Personalised Plan: Once your results are ready, Dr Amaral walks you through your scans clearly on screen. You will leave your consultation knowing precisely what is happening, which findings are completely harmless, and what bespoke treatment or preventative plan will protect your long-term health.

Specialist Clinical Expertise & Background
Dr Amaral practices across North and North West London—holding private clinics at The Hendon Hospital, Bishops Wood Hospital (Northwood), and The Clementine Churchill Hospital (Harrow)—and welcomes both self-funding patients and patients insured with Bupa, Aviva, AXA Health, Vitality, Healix and WPA.
After studying medicine in Germany (Düsseldorf) and Switzerland (Bern) and qualifying in 2004, Dr Amaral completed his specialist cardiology training in London, including prestigious fellowships at King’s College Hospital and the Royal Brompton Hospital. Alongside his clinical training, he was awarded two postgraduate research doctorates—an MD(Res) and a PhD from King’s College London.
Uniquely, Dr Amaral also trained in anaesthetics prior to specialising in cardiology and serves as Clinical Lead for Perioperative Cardiology and Heart Failure at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. This gives him specialist authority in preoperative cardiac assessments, helping patients due to undergo orthopaedic, general, or other surgeries obtain rapid cardiac clearance and avoid last-minute surgical delays.
