Mr Pennington pursued a surgical career from his early days at medical school, and was attracted to Orthopaedics by the opportunity to make an immediate and tangible difference to patients’ symptoms. He went on to train in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery and specialise in shoulder and elbow surgery.
He has a high volume total shoulder replacement practice and offers the most cutting edge techniques and implants to deal with as wide a spectrum of cases as possible. He has developed a particular interest, and reputation, within the Yorkshire region for the management of complex and revision shoulder arthroplasty cases.
Mr Pennington graduated with honours in 2004 from the University of Leeds and subsequently completed all of his surgical training in Yorkshire. In 2013, he was appointed as the sole Fellow on the highly regarded Coventry Shoulder Fellowship with Steve Drew and Tom Lawrence. This gave him a unique experience of a high volume of operating in the whole spectrum of shoulder and elbow surgery. He further enhanced his experience by being awarded the British Elbow and Shoulder Society Mayo Elbow Fellowship in 2015; affording him the opportunity to visit and spend time working alongside Shawn O’Driscoll at the Mayo Clinic in 2016.
He was appointed as a Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust in 2015. He has busy NHS and private practices, providing specialist assessment, advice and treatment for elective and trauma shoulder problems.
He firmly believes in a patient centred approach, and to tailoring your care towards the goals and outcomes that matter most to you.
Research and Awards
Mr Pennington has multiple peer-reviewed publications and has co-authored an international book chapter on revision shoulder arthroplasty techniques. He holds a postgraduate qualification in Medical Education and is an enthusiastic trainer of tomorrow’s Orthopaedic surgeons. He continues to be actively involved in research centred around advancing shoulder techniques and related outcomes.
Personal Life
He enjoys spending his free time with his wife, two children and dog. He enjoys the outdoors and particular mountainous biking and running in West Yorkshire and beyond.
