I studied medicine in Glasgow qualifying in 1979. Following extensive experience in all the medical specialities relating to Internal Medicine, I trained in Rheumatology at Saint Thomas' Hospital in London, where I was subsequently Honorary Consultant Physician for 7 years.  At Saint Thomas' I engaged in internationally important medical research in lupus and in vasculitis, particularly in relation to pregnancy.  I also qualified in Rehabilitation Medicine, training at the Defence Medical Services rehabilitation unit at Headley court.

I was appointed as Consultant Rheumatologist to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases at Bath in 1995.
