About Mr Murtaza Salem

Personal Profile

Mr Salem is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon. He has been working at Nottingham University Hospitals as a Consultant since 2020. After graduating at the University of Nottingham with Honours in 2005, Mr Salem completed his basic and higher surgical training in the East Midlands. During training he took time out to complete a 3-year PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences at The University of Leicester. His main area of research was assessing the unstable atherosclerotic plaque that leads to strokes and how to prevent and treat these.

After becoming the first person in the UK to complete a dedicated vascular surgery training program in 2019, Mr Salem completed a well renowned lower limb fellowship at St Thomas’ Hospital in London where he received intensive training in treating complex lower limb wound and diabetic foot complications. The fellowship focused on the use of open and keyhole procedures to improve blood flow into the leg and optimal management of diabetic foot problems. After becoming appointed as a consultant at Nottingham University Hospitals, Mr Salem was instrumental in developing new pathways for patients with diabetic foot complications needing more complex care.

Mr Salem remains heavily involved in research, education and teaching. He is Deputy Lead for Undergraduate Surgery at Nottingham University Hospitals and works tirelessly to provide teaching to medical students and post graduate doctors. Mr Salem has developed the Special Study Module in Vascular Surgery at Nottingham University Hospitals and is currently a committee member for writing the FRCS Vascular Surgery board examinations. Additionally, he is a supervisor to numerous work experience students, medical students, foundation year doctors and more senior doctors in training. He also mentors and supports International Medical Graduates who are undertaking a clinical attachment in the UK or working their first NHS Post.

Academically Mr Salem has published numerous peer reviewed articles in high impact journals and has presented at National and International Conferences. He is currently the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator on a number of randomised clinical trials and is currently Head of Vascular Governance at Nottingham University Hospitals and oversees all aspects of improving and delivering the best care possible.

Clinically Mr Salem is vastly experienced in managing all aspects of vascular surgical conditions including leg ulcers, foot and leg pain, aneurysms, carotid artery blockages, diabetic foot problems and varicose veins. He is very experienced in minimally invasive local anaesthetic procedures to treat varicose veins. He has independently performed hundreds of procedures for patients and works closely with other specialists including spinal surgeons and cardiologists to support cases where needed.

In his spare time Mr Salem spends time raising awareness of diabetes and circulatory problems in his local community and spending time with his family, travelling and participating in all sports, particularly CrossFit and Football.
