About Mr Mike Adams

Personal Profile

Mr Mike Adams is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon who specialises in cataract surgery, refractive lens replacement for those seeking greater freedom from glasses, and the management of corneal, conjunctival and ocular surface disease. With over twenty years’ experience in ophthalmology, he provides comprehensive care ranging from routine cataract surgery to more complex conditions and procedures. His practice is built around careful assessment, clear explanation and tailoring treatment plans to each patient’s visual needs and lifestyle. Patients often comment on his calm, approachable manner and the time he takes to explain both diagnosis and treatment options. Mike read medicine at Gonville & Caius College, University of Cambridge, qualifying as a doctor in 2002, and completing a Masters degree focused on the neurophysiology of vision. After his initial training posts, he went on to work in leading UK eye units including Oxford, St Thomas’, and Moorfields Eye Hospital where he held an Honorary Fellowship in cornea and external eye disease. This broad training underpins his specialist work today. In 2016 Mike was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. There he co-founded a high-productivity NHS cataract unit which has been used as a blueprint for other cataract services across NHS England and Scotland. The unit’s focus on safe, efficient, consultant-delivered surgery transformed local waiting times and has helped thousands of patients regain and improve their

sight. His NHS work continues to inform his private practice, particularly in complex cases and in optimising outcomes for patients with other eye conditions alongside cataract. Alongside his private practice, Mike performs around 3,000 NHS cataract operations each year at Optegra, an independent sector provider. At Optegra he also established a national cataract training programme for NHS resident surgeons, ensuring that future consultants gain the robust, hands-on experience they need. His surgical volume and training roles mean that patients benefit from a highly refined technique and a deep understanding of outcome data and safety standards. Mike’s private clinics offer cataract surgery, refractive lens replacement and specialist corneal care for both self-funding and insured patients. He has particular expertise in premium intraocular lenses, complex cataract surgery (including cases with previous eye surgery or corneal disease), and the diagnosis and management of conditions such as keratoconus, Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy, recurrent corneal erosion and severe dry eye. Education and professional standards are a central part of Mike’s career. He served for six years on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Training Committee and Council, helping to shape national training and assessment in ophthalmology. He is a regular faculty member for the College’s microsurgical skills courses, teaching junior surgeons the fundamentals of safe intraocular surgery. In industry and innovation, Mike acts as an adviser to an AI healthcare company and frequently speaks at regional and international meetings on topics ranging from cataract service design to new technologies in eye care. Outside ophthalmology, Mike is happiest on a bicycle or a boat.
