Michael Kuo graduated from the University of Birmingham and was trained in otolaryngology on the West Midlands Higher Surgical Training Programme. A fluent Cantonese speaker, he also trained under Professor William Wei at the University of Hong Kong. He has visited several centres of excellence as a Royal College of Surgeons of England Ethicon Fellow including the Johns Hopkins University, the Boston Children’s Hospital and the Chicago Children’s Memorial Hospital.
During his training, he spent three years pursuing molecular biology research as a Medical Research Council and Royal College of Surgeons fellow leading to a PhD.

His extensive involvement in education includes convening the Intercollegiate Examination Course, being on the foundation faculty of the British Paediatric Otolaryngology Course and the Paediatric Emergency Skills Course for Consultants. Mr Kuo chaired the education committee of the European Society for Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology and will chair the Scientific Committee of the Confederation of European ORL societies meeting in Dublin 2024. He was the President of the British Association for Paediatric Otolaryngology 2018-2020. He has published numerous original research papers, review articles and book chapters. He sits on the international editorial board of The Laryngoscope. Mr Kuo is the President elect of the Section of Laryngology and Rhinology of the Royal Society of Medicine.

As Simpson Research Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Michael undertook research in the molecular genetics of head and neck cancer leading to a PhD in 2000. He continued his research as a joint Medical Research Council / Royal College of Surgeons of England Clinical Training Fellow. For his research work, he was awarded the BMA Albert McMaster Award (1998), the Xomed-Treace Prize (1999) and the Angell-James Prize (2000). In 2001, he was elected to a Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Michael continues to pursue clinical research and support basic science research. He is an editorial board member of the journal “Laryngoscope”.

Michael is committed to both undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching. From 2001-2008, he coordinated the teaching programme in paediatric otolaryngology and with Paul Pracy, co-founded the Birmingham-Bristol Intercollegiate Examination Course in Otolaryngology, which is now in its tenth year. From 2005-2008, Michael chaired the education and training committee of ENT-UK and since its inception, has been on the foundation faculty of the British Paediatric Otolaryngology Course.

From 2000-2010, Mr Kuo was also a consultant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, running the professional voice clinic as well as having a comprehensive general adult otolaryngology practice.

He was vice-president of the section of laryngology and rhinology of the Royal Society of Medicine and the honorary secretary of the British Association for Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology.
