Max was awarded his BA degree in Medical Sciences, University of Cambridge in 1985, where he was an undergraduate at St Catharine’s College. He continued his postgraduate medical studies at The John Radcliffe Hospital and Magdalen College, University of Oxford, and qualified as a Doctor with a BM BCh degree in 1988. He gained full registration with the GMC in 1989.Following Senior House Officer posts at Guy’s Hospital, London, and The Radcliffe Hospitals, Oxford, Max took up an appointment as Medical Registrar at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

He was granted a National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s disease (NACC) Research award in 1993 to join the Medical Research Council Dunn Clinical Nutrition Centre, Cambridge. His MD Thesis entitled “Sulphate-reducing bacteria, sulphur metabolism and ulcerative colitis” was commended in 1996 by the University of Cambridge. He was Senior Registrar in Gastroenterology at The John Radcliffe Hospital until 1998 when he was appointed as Consultant Gastroenterologist and Physician at St Mark’s and Northwick Park Hospitals, Harrow. He was elected as Chairman of Medicine at St Mark’s by his peers in 2007 and Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at The Clementine Churchill Hospital in 2010.

  • Max has a clinical research interest in gut bacteria and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and is a medical advisor to Crohn’s and Colitis UK (formerly NACC). As well as running a specialist IBD service, Max sees patients with a variety of general Gastroenterology and Hepatology problems and patients with suspected gastrointestinal cancer.
  • All such patients are managed in close collaboration with specialist surgical and oncology colleagues as part of a multidisciplinary team. He is jointly responsible for the acute Gastroenterology inpatient workload admitted to Northwick Park and St Mark’s Hospitals, as well as the therapeutic ERCP service.
