About Mr Max Johnston

Mr Personal Profile

Mr Max Johnston is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Sarum Road hospital in Winchester. He is a substantive Consultant at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust and an Honorary Consultant at University Hospital Southampton.

Mr Johnston is excited to offer holistic and comprehensive Urological care to self-funding and insured patients from across South and Central England.

Mr Johnston always takes time to listen to his patient’s concerns and to ensure the impact of their symptoms is understood before suggesting tests that may be appropriate. He carefully considers the balance of likely side-effects and the potential benefit of any treatment before making recommendations.

As a patient in consultation with Mr Johnston you can expect to be treated with expertise and kindness. Any suggested tests will be necessary and contribute to what can be a difficult decision to undergo surgery or take a new medicine.

Mr Johnston is one of just a few Urologists who can offer most of the available treatments for an enlarged prostate. He is expert in HoLEP, Rezum, TURP and bladder neck incision. He is also pleased to have recently started to offer prostate Aquablation and iTind. Prostates of varies shapes and sizes can be treated successfully and careful consideration will always be paid to an individual patient’s needs. Those with a permanent catheter may benefit from HoLEP whilst those looking to preserve their sexual function may opt for Rezum or Aquablation.

Mr Johnston’s other main interests are in all aspects of kidney stone disease and prostate cancer diagnostics. Mr Johnston understands that these conditions can cause great anxiety. He combines rapid diagnostics with excellent knowledge of published research and international guidelines to help patients make informed decision about their treatment.

Mr Johnston works closely with Mr James Brewin, the first surgeon in the region to offer HoLEP surgery and participates in the cancer multidisciplinary team whilst leading the stone multidisciplinary team.

Mr Johnston’s patients have commented within the last year on his excellent communication skills and he is also an enthusiastic trainer of younger surgeons in the Wessex region.

Mr Johnston attended Cardiff University for his MBBCh, Imperial College for his PhD (supervised by Lord Darzi) and gained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2021. He has over 50 publications in learned journals and has presented regularly at national and international meetings.

Mr Johnston lives in Winchester with his young family. He enjoys playing squash and is an amateur gardener.
