Mr Solan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in foot and ankle. He has been published extensively and regularly teaches on both national and international courses. He is visiting Lecturer at the University of Surrey and visiting Professor at London South Bank University (LSBU). He served on the Scientific Committee for BOFAS for 10 years, including as Chair.
Mr Matthew Solan graduated from St Thomas Hospital Medical School in 1992 and went on to complete his general surgical training in London, Guildford, Oxford and Dublin. His specialist orthopaedic training was conducted in the South Thames (West) Region. He was awarded a British Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellowship to Dublin and has also worked abroad in South Africa and at the Universities of Johns Hopkins and Maryland, Baltimore, USA.
He has published extensively on foot and ankle surgery due to his special interests in orthopaedic trauma and in foot and ankle disorders affecting adults and children. Mr Solan was part of the Cartiva Motion Study Group and has contributed to award-winning research into new treatments for arthritis in the big toe.
He is Visiting Professor at London South Bank University and Honorary Lecturer at the University of Surrey, Guildford.
In addition, Mr Solan has contributed to the Oxford Textbook of Orthopaedic Surgery as well as Bailey and Love’s Surgical Practice. He’s on the editorial panel for the journal of the European Foot and Ankle Society and also for the Bone and Joint Journal.
Mr Solan teaches both nationally and internationally and is proud to be part of the Barouk Forefoot Surgery Faculty in Bordeaux and Zimmer Biomet Learning Centre. Back in the UK he runs the UK Forefoot Surgery Course and the Arthroscopy of the Ankle Course at the internationally recognised centre of excellence, the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit in Guildford’s Postgraduate Medical School. He has been Program Director for Orthopaedic Surgery Training in Kent, Surrey and Sussex for 10 years.
Mr Solan was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Frimley Park Hospital in 2003 and was subsequently appointed to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in 2006. His special interests are in arthroscopic surgery, forefoot surgery, rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries, and heel pain. Within his private practice, Mr Solan runs a one-stop clinic for Achilles tendon and plantar fasciitis problems.
He has weekly clinics at Mount Alvernia Hospital.
