Personal Profile

Matthew is a Consultant Cardiologist specialising in General Cardiology, advanced pacemaker therapy and Heart Failure. He sees patients with symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, angina, palpitations, dizziness and blackouts at The Alexandra Hospital in Cheshire. He also offers Heart Health Checks which can help detect cardiovascular problems at an early stage.

Matthew offers a personal, friendly service. Appointments can be arranged at short notice to fit around your schedule, and all of Matthew’s patients are given full contact details, including his mobile number. He always responds quickly to any questions or concerns.

Patient care is Matthew’s top priority. He works closely with specialist nurses, physicians and GPs to ensure his patients receive high-quality care throughout their journey. From initial consultations to aftercare and follow-up checks, Matthew’s patients receive personal care and support.

Matthew specialises in General Cardiology, Advanced Heart Failure and Complex Pacemaker/Defibrillator Implantation. From April 2017 he was the Heart Failure and Device Lead for the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, where he worked across several hospitals. While here, he was instrumental in setting up the award-winning ‘Primary Care Heart Failure Service’. This service provides specialist support to GP practices and has helped to identify and care for heart failure patients more effectively within the community.

Matthew has recently moved to Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, a world-renowned specialist cardiac centre. Here, he continues his work as a Heart Failure and Complex Device Specialist and is the Cheshire & Mersey Network Lead for Heart Failure and Complex Devices. He’s also developed close links with ‘The Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science’, a collaborative research programme that brings together world-leading specialists in cardiovascular medicine.

Matthew is continually involved in research projects that develop understanding and treatment of heart failure. After gaining his medical degree from the University of Leeds in 2003, he won funding from the British Heart Foundation for a PhD investigating heart failure outcomes and the influence of insulin-resistance on vascular regeneration. While working on this, he published over 15 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He also won the British Atherosclerosis Young Investigator of the Year Award.

After completing his specialist training, Matthew undertook the prestigious Advanced Heart Failure and Complex Device Fellowship at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester. This is a major cardiac centre for the North West where Matthew was able to gain experience in specialist techniques for pacemaker and complex device implantation. He worked as part of the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant team with some of the best cardiologists in the North West, furthering his specialist understanding of heart failure.

Matthew is currently working with Manchester University to investigate TRIAGE-HF, which is a new way of monitoring patients remotely using cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). He also thoroughly enjoys teaching medical students and junior doctors as well as sharing expertise with other consultants and GPs.

Matthew has a talent for explaining the complexities of cardiology in simple terms. He takes time to help his patients understand their conditions and their options for treatment. His patients speak highly of the way he helps them and their loved ones to understand their health problems, and make their own choices about the treatments and care they receive.
