Personal Profile
My NHS practice as a Consultant Neurologist began in December 1996 with time split between South Buckinghamshire and the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford; now the John Radcliffe Hospital. Inpatients are treated at the John Radcliffe Hospital, where I also teach medical students and trainee neurologists. I have been voted the best neurology teacher/trainer by these trainees many times and am pleased to have trained most of the Consultant Neurologists currently in Oxford. I see more NHS patients annually than any other neurologist in the Thames Valley and in an audit conducted in Oxford was the most cost-effective neurologist. I have worked for the NICE Committee. I set up the first Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, TIA (stroke), and treatment injections (for dystonia and migraine) and motor neurone disease specialist clinics in Buckinghamshire. These are on-going. I do regular on-call emergency stroke treatment at High Wycombe (covers mid and south Bucks and East Berkshire).
My neurology training began at the Queen’s Medical Centre Nottingham, including two and a half years researching the clinical/neuropathological basis of frontotemporal dementias and related conditions towards a DM. Further training was at the Midlands Centre for Neurology and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
Clinical Interests
I do sub-specialty longstanding clinics in Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias (Oxford). Special clinics for dystonia and migraine and Greater Occipital nerve block clinic for migraine, cluster headache and allied headaches. A motor neurone disease specialty clinic. I and a radiologist have been regularly performing ultrasound-guided injections for inaccessible muscles for spasticity and dystonia.

Research Interests
These include both clinical and neuropathological subjects. Recently I have been principally involved aiding trainees and colleagues in research on the neurological basis of so-called channelopathies (I was the first to describe with Buckley et al a group of now widely recognised and treatable conditions), apathy, migraine and cluster headache.
