About Mr Matthew Hampton

Personal Profile

Mr Matt Hampton is Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, with a private practice at Thornbury Hospital. His practice specialises in all aspects of knee surgery including arthroscopy, primary and revision ligament reconstruction, patella dislocations, cartilage repair and transplantation, osteotomy, and primary partial and total knee arthroplasty.

At Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Matt has a complex tertiary referral practice, offering second opinions for the management of failed anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions, multi-ligament knee injuries, cartilage repair/transplantation, osteotomy and trochleoplasty surgery.

Mr Hampton aims to help keep his patients fit and active through both non-operative and operative interventions, including Arthrosamid® joint injections to the knee.

He completed his higher surgical training on the South Yorkshire rotation. He then went on to complete prestigious fellowships specialising solely in knee surgery at the Guys and St Thomas Hospitals in London and the internationally-renowned Robert Jones Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry. He also spent time learning advanced and specialist sports knee interventions from world-renowned surgeons in America (Brian Cole) and Canada (Alan Getgood).

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Hampton is heavily involved in clinical research, striving to improve patient outcomes in knee surgery, with over 50 peer-reviewed publications and both national and international presentations. He served as the National Research Fellow for the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).

He is actively engaged in training the next generation of knee surgeons. Alongside training specialist registrars, he runs a fellowship with his colleagues at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals to enable them to treat patients with knee conditions to the best of their ability.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and young family and playing a round of golf when he can.

Mr Hampton has also hosted an online event, covering the treatments he offers at Thornbury Hospital. Click here to watch the free event.
